Boys & Men

The Boys & Men Co-Lab is a collaborative philanthropic fund aiming to mobilize $30 million to support 18 organizations working to strengthen community & fraternity, fatherhood, and education and skills for boys and men across the U.S.

Over the past several decades, rates of suicide, loneliness, educational disengagement, and children growing up without a father at home have all risen sharply across the United States. The ties that once connected boys and men to family, community, and civic life have frayed.

Alongside leading philanthropic partners, we created the Boys & Men Co-Lab to meet this moment. The Co-Lab supports 18 grantees, each receiving flexible multiyear funding so they can direct resources where they are needed most.

These challenges are real, but they don’t diminish the continued importance of advancing opportunities for women and girls. Supporting boys and men is inseparable from supporting a thriving society. By investing where it matters most, in friendship and community, in fatherhood and family stability, and in educational environments better designed to support boys and young men, we can turn this moment of crisis into a turning point for millions of boys and men nationwide.

Community & Fraternity

We believe every boy and man deserves people to show up for, and people who show up for them. But at a moment when friendship, civic participation, and belonging have all eroded, that kind of connection is harder to find. For too many boys and men, the everyday social fabric of male life has frayed, leaving them without the relationships and community that help people weather life's hardest moments. The Co-Lab's community and fraternity grantees are reaching boys and men at risk of disengaging. Their work is rooted in community spaces, strengthens identity through contribution and commitment, and builds the kind of durable peer networks that can carry men through transitions in work, family, and midlife.

Fatherhood

Children thrive when their fathers are present, and fathers stay present when the systems, services, and relationships around them make it possible. But for many fathers, that support is missing. Cultural, legal, and economic barriers can make it hard to stay involved in their children's lives, even when the desire to do so is strong. The Co-Lab's fatherhood grantees work on both sides of that gap, removing the friction that pushes fathers out while strengthening what helps them stay engaged. Their work focuses especially on nonresident fathers, who face some of the steepest barriers to involvement. This approach benefits children, fathers, and families alike, and recognizes that lasting change requires coordination across systems, services, and trusted relationships.

Education & Skills

Every boy deserves a school where he is engaged, supported, and can see a future for himself. But for too many boys, that isn't the reality. Disengagement from education means showing up less, falling behind, losing interest, and eventually disconnecting from school altogether. For boys already navigating difficult circumstances, this can close off pathways to opportunity before they've ever had a chance to find their footing. The Co-Lab's education and skills grantees work upstream, reshaping how boys experience school before disengagement takes hold. By supporting learning environments that are boy-friendly, vocationally relevant, and grounded in belonging and relationship, they focus on root causes rather than symptoms and build practices strong enough to replicate across school systems and reach a wider range of students.
